Middle East University organised a dialogue session entitled “The Fine Line Between Freedom of Expression and Hate Speech”. The session was presented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Hazem Al-Nsour, and Faculty of Media member, Dr. Sabah Al-Harahsheh, in cooperation with the Faculty of Media and the “Media Without Hate” initiative. The event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Ramez Abu Hasira, along with faculty members and a gathering of students.
During the meeting, Dr. Hazem Al-Nsour reviewed the concept of freedom of expression as stipulated in local and international laws. He outlined the legal challenges facing journalists in the current media landscape, pointing to examples of media cases that have sparked legal controversy regarding the boundaries of free speech.
In her address, Dr. Sabah Al-Harahsheh focused on the media’s role in entrenching values of tolerance and rejecting hate speech. She emphasised the importance of the ethical and professional responsibility of media practitioners when dealing with issues of public opinion, steering clear of incitement and exclusion.
Dr. Ramez Abu Hasira, Dean of the Faculty of Media, also highlighted the role of media colleges in preparing journalists equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to combat any form of discrimination and biased discourse.
At the conclusion of the session, an open interactive discussion took place among the participants. This exchange embodied the university’s vision of preparing opinion leaders who possess legal and intellectual awareness and who contribute to building professional media that foster a culture of dialogue and mutual respect.
