Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin: “The Free Reading and Creative Writing Award fosters the awareness and cultural identity of university youth.”

Middle East University formally announced the outcomes of the fifth season of the Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin Award for Free Reading and Creative Writing. This prestigious iteration witnessed spirited competition from over fourteen Jordanian universities, culminating in the commendation of six institutions. The ceremony was held under the auspices of the Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin, in the presence of the President of the University, Professor Salam Al-Mahadin, alongside a distinguished assembly of academics, students, and their families.

Furthermore, during his address, Dr. Yacoub Nasereddin emphasised that the award serves as a vital mechanism for consolidating students’ connection to the Arabic language and their inherent cultural identity. He noted that such initiatives are designed to galvanise the intellectual and imaginative capacities of the student body. In doing so, he reaffirmed the university’s steadfast commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural and creative movement across Jordanian higher education institutions.

With respect to the competitive proceedings, the ceremony celebrated excellence across several academic and literary disciplines. In the category of free reading, Farah Al-Badr from Yarmouk University secured the first position, followed by Shahd Al-Adayleh of Mutah University in second and Sally Al-Dahoun from the University of Jordan in third.

Equally noteworthy were the achievements in the short story category, where Ruaa Al-Uwaisi of Princess Sumaya University for Technology claimed the top prize. Razan Al-Shawabkeh from Al-Hussein Technical University earned the second-place distinction, whilst MEU’s own Nour Abu Sabih secured the third position.

Regarding the essay category, Middle East University demonstrated significant academic prowess as Qasim Al-Haroub and Abdeen Al-Dajani secured first and second place, respectively. The third position was shared between Salma Al-Saghir of the University of Jordan and Liana Al-Shakaa of Al-Hussein Technical University.

In conclusion, the primary objective of this award remains the cultivation of a robust culture of literacy and innovation among the student population. By providing a structured platform for intellectual engagement, the award enables students to articulate their perspectives and visions regarding both their local communities and the global landscape.

Middle East University was founded in 2005 in Amman, the capital of Jordan, located approximately 15 minutes from the city centre. The university’s campus is secure and conducive to learning, in accordance with the needs of students, academic and administrative bodies, and guests of the university.
The university comprises nine faculties and three academic programmes, namely, bachelor’s degree, higher diploma and master’s degree, in addition to hosted programmes with the most prestigious British universities.
