The Department of Architecture at Middle East University’s Faculty of Engineering and Design has achieved a significant milestone, securing second place in a prestigious competition dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza.
The award-winning entry, submitted by student Ahmed Bilal Al-Khuraishi, presents an advanced design concept for the redevelopment of the Al-Shifa Hospital site. The proposal envisions the location not merely as a medical facility, but as a site of profound historical memory and humanitarian significance.
Developed under the supervision of faculty member Engineer Walaa Atef Al-Qarra, the project adopts a “witness architecture” philosophy. The design integrates specialised medical buildings and health clinics with a memorial healing garden, creating a space that honours the site’s national identity and its role as a witness to recent history.
